Minibeasts & Pond Dipping Print E-mail

Minibeasts

How to recognise the different creepy crawlies and what makes each one individual. Learn how important these critters are to the world as we know it and start to identify the features that divide them up into classes in the animal kingdom.

Meadow & Woodland Habitats

An introductory session to introduce children to identifying and finding minibeasts using sweep nets and pitfalls. Use of magnifying pots to take a closer look enabling children to start to identify distinguishing features between classes.

Activity length: 1 hour
Key Stage: 1-2

Pond Dipping

Explore what lurks in the depths of a pond using nets. Start to look at the life cycles and how to use a simple identification key. For this activity the children will be divided up into smaller groups, with one net and tray between groups, to limit congestion at the waters edge! This activity can also be re-located to the river!

Activity length: 1 hour
Key Stage: 1-2 (and 3)

Notes:

Add an extra 30 mins to either of these activities to include food chains/webs and how the organisms interact in this watery environment.

Activity length: 1:30
Key Stage: 3
