Rivers
This activity looks at river processes and how to carry out simple fieldwork tasks, to give a cleaner picture of how a river operates and the effect it has on the surrounding landscape.

Measuring look at the width and depth of the River Allen where it flows through Honeybrook. Look at how and why a meander forms, deposition, erosion, transportation and velocity. Draw a sketch of the river and label its main features.

BOD (biological oxygenated demand) - Use kick samples to discover what organisms lives in the river. What do these species show us about the quality of the water?

Notes:

This is a very hands on session. Children/students will be divided up into groups. Wellies are a must! Please discuss this session with the Ranger so it can be tailored to your needs and fieldwork can then be used back in the classroom if necessary.
