Wildlife Adventure Trail
Walk around Honeybrook, learning about the farm animals along the way, carry out a scavenger hunt in between your choice of 5 activities from below:

  • Meadow sweep netting - what is a meadow and what lives in it? Use a sweep net to find the minibeasts and then identify them useing a simple key.
  • Pond dipping -  what lurks in a pong? Have a dip with a net to discover what lives in a pond, then use a simple key to identify the creatures and understand their distinguishing features.
  • Mammal tracks & signs - learn what types of animals make what prints and what signs are left behind by these animals and what they tell us. Look at footprints, animal faeces, food remains and burrows.
  • Woodland minibeasts - learn how to build a pitfall trap to identify what minibeasts live in the woodlands. Look at distinguishing features and start to divide minibeasts into classes.
  • Wild flowers - a basic introduction to different flowering plants. Includes sketching, labelling the parts of a flower, and taking leaf rubbings.
  • Tree measuring - discover different tree species, learn how to measure the height of a tree and work out how old it is.
  • Tree identification & bark rubbing - this is a sensory activity, helping us to identify trees through touch. Make a bark rubbing of a tree to take home.
  • Food webs - learn how species interact within a habitat. Basic introduction to food chains and webs. Also looks at how environmental factors and human impact may influence this ecosystem.

Session length: All day, 3 hours minimum.
